Saturday 29th April 2017: Wind speeds were forecast to reach 40mph on a course that offers no shelter, and sends runners heading right into the wind for the final four miles. Did it stop them? This is Tiree – of course it didn’t! Our runners battled it out and conquered, with smiles and celebrations as they crossed the line in the sunshine to complete the 12th edition of the Tiree 10k & Half Marathon.
The event this year proved to be another fantastic weekend, with runners travelling from Spain, France, Canada and the home countries to take part. Tiree itself fielded a strong group of local runners, with several former Tiree High School pupils coming back to run the distance.
The winning times this year: 39mins and 41mins for the 10k (male and female), won by John Dunlop from East Lothian and Carmen Oliveras from Paris.
For the Half Marathon, our winners took 1hr23 and 1hr29 (male & female), won by Jon Hammerman from Greenock and Josephine Anselin from Aberdeen.
Prizes this year were beautiful original paintings from Jack Lockhart, presented on the beach they were inspired by.
The kids races were the first off, with 45 young runners starting, across three age groups, so toddlers to teens were all included. Race referee Sarah le Roux and her team of helpers made this a really fun event for our local kids and all the visitors. Well done to our runners, and thank you everyone who cheered them on.
Many runners this year commented on how tough the run was, with the headwind proving to be a real challenge. However, this comment was often made with a smile on the face, and with a sense of satisfaction and achievement, and in no way did it hinder the weekend. In fact, the atmosphere at the finish line, and at the prize giving and dance was magnificent.
So well done Tiree – from all the supporters, the event crew, the amazing cafe team, the people that went out of their way to make the runners feel welcome – you put on a great show. And thank you to all our visitors – you make the atmosphere what it is, and it’s been great to have you all over to Tiree and share this wonderful island with you.
We’ll be announcing details and entry for next year very soon. But for now, put the date in your diary – Saturday 5th May 2018.
Photos are being shared on the Tiree Fitness Facebook page and the 10k & HM group. I’ll also get some galleries put up here on the website.
So from us at Tiree Fitness – all the best for the summer, and if you’re over on Tiree do call in to say hi. We’ll see you on the beach next time!
