Finland was the one of the main races of the year for me and a first shot at an age group event for team GB. So I had no idea what to expect.
As it happened it was a great experience, the team were really friendly and most of them had raced at this level before. The support was also excellent with the team manager, mechanic and massage therapist available to support the team. So thanks Pete, Dave and Christine for all your help.
Race day started off well for me with a 4km swim in 1hr05. This is still a good 10mins behind a reasonable pro swim but for me it’s ok, minimal swim training this year meant it was just a case of getting through it.
And the run: 4 laps, flat, pleasant course but there’s no getting away from the 30km that had to be done. Predictably the first lap was uncomfortable just trying to find a rhythm. Caught a few people though and stormed through lap 2 feeling strong. Lap 3 and 4 were just brutal, really suffered. Finished all in at 6hrs26 and 3rd place in my age group so brought home a bronze medal.
Overall very pleased with that and a decent measure of what needs to be done for next time.
Thanks everyone who sent messages of encouragement and especially for those who came to the pier on Wednesday, drinking champagne at 9am is the way forward, I will expect that every time now, even when I’ve not been to a race!!
