“The Isle of Tiree is the most westerly island of the Inner Hebrides. It is relatively small – about twelve miles long and three miles wide – and very flat. Although the name means ‘the land of corn’ it has been described variously as ‘a raised beach’ and ‘the land below the waves’.”
“The island has a mild climate with some of the highest levels of sunshine recorded anywhere in the British Isles. It benefits from the moderating influence of the Gulf Stream ensuring that frost is rare and evenings in mid-summer are warm and balmy.”
Tiree is a great place to be active – the air is fresh, the views are amazing, it’s an unspoilt landscape to just enjoy being out in.

Getting to Tiree
Caledonian MacBrayne run the ferry service to the islands. During the summer there is a ferry every day, it takes 4 hours from Oban and the departure times vary throughout the week. From October to March this timetable is reduced to 4 ferries a week. Although the ferry journey can be a hassle sometimes it actually serves to make Tiree more remote, enhancing the feel that you really are coming out to a tiny island out in the sea away from all the pressures of mainland life.
There’s also a flight from Glasgow every day with Logan Air and flights from Oban on Mondays and Wednesdays with Hebridean Air Service.
Accommodation
See the Isle of Tiree Community website for a detailed accommodation list. For guest house accommodation we recommend Rockvale Guest House, they do THE BEST breakfast! For self catering check out Millhouse Hostel. For a Tiree B&B experience there’s the very smart Beach House and Mannal House located in beautiful parts of the island. Camping is available at the Wild Diamond campsite in Balinoe. For larger groups the best option is the Hynish Centre who can offer full board accommodation.
There are also plenty of self catering cottages -the Isle of Tiree Community website has a full listing. Some of them have their own websites like Go Tiree which is three lovely properties that we’d definitely recommend.
Eating out
If you’re sweating it out in the gym there’s no better place to eat out than right next door at Ceabhar restaurant in Sandaig – great specials, a selection of real ales and warm hospitality from Duncan & Polly. There’s also Beachcomber Cafe, Tiree Lodge Hotel, Scarinish Hotel, Farmhouse Cafe and the Cobbled Cow tearoom.

Tiree is most famous for being windy and having amazing beaches. Put the two together and you have a perfect place to windsurf, kitesurf and on the calmer days paddleboard or surf. For beginners there is a shallow freshwater loch for learning to windsurf. All these activities can be provided by Wild Diamond.
